Tuba City Boarding School Thunderbird

At Tuba City Boarding School, we believe that athletics are a vital component of the educational experience, offering students opportunities to grow physically, socially, and emotionally. Our athletics program reflects our commitment to equity, sportsmanship, and fostering a well-rounded education for all students.

Vision

We provide a safe and positive environment where students feel supported and encouraged to participate in school-sponsored athletics. Our athletics program is guided by consistent and equitable expectations that prioritize the highest standards of quality and student well-being.

Philosophy

Interscholastic athletics at Tuba City Boarding School are an integral part of the overall education program. While competition and winning are valued, they are not the sole focus of our program. Instead, we emphasize:

  • Sportsmanship: Encouraging respect, fairness, and teamwork during athletic events.
  • Balance: Maintaining a proper balance between academic and extracurricular pursuits.
  • Equal Opportunities: Ensuring equal access to participation in all sports for girls and boys.
  • Development: Supporting the physical, social, and emotional growth of all student-athletes.

Athletic Participation Requirements

To ensure the health and safety of our student-athletes, the following requirements must be met before participation in interscholastic sports:

  1. Parent/Guardian Consent: The school must have a signed parental or legal guardian consent form on file.
  2. Physical Exam: A completed and signed pre-participation physical examination within the last year is required, along with a concussion test certificate.
  3. Grade Eligibility: Students must pass all their classes to participate. Weekly grade checks are conducted, and ineligible students may practice but cannot compete or travel with the team.
  4. Attendance: Unexcused absences may result in ineligibility for practices or competitions. Excessive absences (more than nine unexcused days) may disqualify students for the remainder of the semester.
  5. Substance Policy: Use or possession of drugs, alcohol or tobacco will result in suspension from athletics for the remainder of the sports season.

Sportsmanship Expectations

Tuba City Boarding School athletes, families, and supporters are expected to uphold the values of safety, respect and responsibility during all school-sponsored events. Good sportsmanship is central to fostering positive experiences for our athletes and their communities.

Goals of the Athletics Program

Our athletics program is designed to:

  1. Foster school pride and tradition.
  2. Enhance school spirit and community engagement.
  3. Align with the overall educational philosophy of the school.
  4. Provide equitable opportunities and value to all sports.
  5. Prioritize student-athlete enjoyment and teach sportsmanship.
  6. Support student development beyond athletics.
  7. Promote teamwork and the learning opportunities inherent in competition.
  8. Teach students to navigate success and adversity constructively.

Athletic Affiliation

Tuba City Boarding School is a member of the Northern Arizona Interscholastic Conference and adheres to the rules and regulations of the National Federation of State High School Associations. Our membership ensures equity in competition and promotes ethical conduct during athletic events.
